Face Mask: How To Use Makeup

Face masks are here to stay, at least until the end of the year 2020, when hopefully the pandemic will be under control. But how do we wear makeup underneath the mask, when it covers half our face? Read here to know how you can still look good with the mask and stay safe at the same time.

Safety comes first, so on with the face mask

In many parts of the world, face masks have become a normal part of our daily lives, and whether you use the masks often or only once in a while, I think that we can all agree that they are pretty uncomfortable to wear. On top of that, if you are like me and enjoy wearing makeup on a daily basis, then it can be somewhat of a struggle to make it work together with the mask. The makeup gets all smeared out if the mask gets in the way. And you probably also experienced that your skin is more sensitive.

After quite some time with the masks, I have gradually gathered some tips and tricks on how to make your makeup work at the same time. So I figured that I would put all of them together in this article. I hope that it will help some of you out there avoid at least some of my struggles.

How to start the new face routine?

You have probably already noticed it over and over. All makeup below the nose gets ruined by the mask. And even when you use just a bit of foundation and concealer, it all rubs into your mask and leaves it full of spots and smudges, so you have to wash it immediately. Not that it is very unhygienic, but the makeup just looks as unappetizing on the inside of the mask as a bronzer or fake tan rubbing off on a white shirt collar. When you put on your usual skin care, so far so good. The mask doesn’t ruin your face lotions significantly after you put the mask on.

You can still wear even heavy eye cream or serum around the eyes. And you can still cover your face in refreshing or hydrating cream. Just let it dry a little before you take on your mask. That way your face will get the nourishment instead of the mask. I have found that for example this cream works really well because it soaks into the skin really quickly, but at the same time leaves your skin really smooth and soft.

No more contouring or blush

Once you are done with hydrating and nourishing your face, the new routine of our new reality comes in. Forget everything you have learned from watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race or the Kardashians. You can no longer use contouring, concealer, rouge or powder! Not even BB cream! The new reality is here and the face mask is unforgiving.
